What is Cosmetic Acupuncture and how does it work?

Modern day practitioners of Western medicine have formed several hypotheses to explain how acupuncture works. One common hypothesis is that acupuncture causes the brain to release beta-Endorphins by stimulating neurohormonal pathways, thus reducing pain. Another is that acupuncture reduces pro-inflammatory markers. One thing scientists agree on is that acupuncture has been shown to reduce pain and promote healing. With Cosmetic acupuncture you are treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. When a tiny sterile acupuncture needles are strategically placed in specific acupuncture points, collagen and elastin production will begin due to the micro-traumas created in the facial muscle tissue, stimulating a reaction similar to those caused in other muscles of the body during a rigorous workout.

When you lift weights or workout, micro tears are formed in your muscle tissue and, as your body repairs these tears, your muscles become stronger and healthier. Your body responds to these micro wounds in the facial muscles by producing more collagen, increasing blood flow to the area and stimulating stem cells to migrate to the face. Essentially, facial acupuncture stimulates the body’s own powers of rejuvenation. It also helps to promote proper lymphatic flow and drainage. What you are left with is a tighter, brighter, and even complexion.

What are the risks of Cosmetic Acupuncture?

There are minimal risks involved with facial acupuncture. In rare cases, some patients experience minor bruising where the needle is inserted. Facial acupuncture is not recommended for patients who are taking blood thinners, have a blood clotting disorder, those with chronic migraines, or are pregnant. If you receive Botox or other filler injections, you should check with your clinician to make sure enough time has passed before receiving facial acupuncture.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

Whether you’re interested in getting facial acupuncture for wrinkles, acne, or other concerns, the treatment itself will be mostly the same. The only slight variation might be in where the needles are placed in your face and body. It is best to avoid taking any blood thinning medications (such as ibuprofen, high doses of fish oil, or aspirin) or drinking alcohol before treatment. other than that you won’t need to go through any pretreatment procedures.

Each facial acupuncture session takes about an hour. When you arrive, you will be asked to lie down on a table and the needles will be lightly inserted into place on your face and body. While you lay there you can listen to music or play a guided meditation to maximize your healing time. Many patients experience a feeling of euphoria or deep relaxation with the acupuncture alone.

After forty-five minutes the needles will be removed and you will receive a mini facial using Flower and Bone Supply clean beauty products. In the initial consultation your practitioner will go over lifestyle recommendations and a tutorial on how to care for your skin at home which may include a guasha lesson. There is no recovery period needed after treatment. Your clinician recommends drinking plenty of water to help flush out any toxins and continuing using the at home skincare regimen as customized for you by your practitioner.

How Long Will It Take to See Results?

Results vary based on patients’ age, current skin condition, and lifestyle. Multiple sessions of facial acupuncture are required to see the greatest improvements. One study found that most people who receive facial acupuncture see visible improvement after five sessions. With consistent treatment you will notice a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, redness, puffiness, sagging skin, acne, acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Skin will be brighter, smoother, tighter and glowing!

Treatment plans will vary depending on the individual and areas of concern, however, a typical course of treatment is 1-2 treatments per week for 6-12 weeks. This provides a sufficient time frame to address any internal imbalances contributing to the state of the skin.

*** Patients are welcome to receive facial rejuvenation treatments once, twice or at their discretion, however, results will be less dramatic and will likely not last as long as the full course of treatment.

Once you complete your consultation, your clinician will make treatment recommendations based on your specific goals. After the initial series of treatments, patients can schedule maintenance sessions every four to eight weeks or more frequently if they wish. Maintaining a healthy diet and incorporating a clearly defined skin care routine will help maximize the results of facial acupuncture. Typically we see that results using the above schedule will last 3-5 years before another series of treatments will be needed.
